BIRTLEY girl Lydia Turner brought success for the region gaining victory in Saturday’s BUPA Junior Great North Run.

Turner (13), finished in 26th place overall, coming home 13secs ahead of Stockport’s Mollie Williams. The 2009 winner, Katy Wood of York, finished third.

The boys event was won by Scarborough’s Josh Schofield, gaining his first major victory since winning the 2009 Northern Under-15 Cross Country Championship.

Jarrow’s Shaun Barras was second ahead of Durham’s Liam Ayton.

The Under-12 event was easily won by Gateshead’s Markhim Lonsdale (11).

It was double success for Birtley as Olivia Bateman (11) won the Girls’ race from Gosforth’s Rhain Purves, finishing 18th overall.
