NEW Birtley recruit Darren Purvis took his first North Eastern Counties’ title, winning yesterday’s 22nd Tynedale 10M Road Race, from Hexham to Ovingham.
Facing a strong headwind during the first half of the race, the former Chester-le-Street athlete (fourth in 2009) soon headed the 530-strong field, pulling away to an 87-second victory over Low Fell’s Jon Archer.
Gateshead’s Conrad Franks finished third, the first three taking the medals for the North Eastern Counties Championship.
Paul Waterston was the first veteran home in fourth, helping Morpeth successfully defend their team title.
Heaton’s Stacey Rogers was another to gain her first regional title, when winning the women’s race 47secs clear of Aida Geragusian of Trafford. Elswick won the team event.
