Duo’s final fling

GATESHEAD duo Sally Scott and Ross Murray progressed through to the final of their respective events at the European Junior Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia.

The Aviva GB and NI pair had no difficulty in making tomorrow’s line-up with Scott having no pole vault failures on the way to clearing the qualification height of 3:90 metres.

Murray, meanwhile, was set up nicely on being drawn in heat two of the 1,500 metres after watching the opening heat run at a leisurely pace.

In a more competitive heat, Murray finished in fifth place, qualifying with ease in a time of 3min 46.54secs, which was much quicker than the winner of the opening heat.

Murray will be joined in the final by GB team-mates Simon Horsfield and Daniel Clorley.

Today sees another Gateshead pair start their bid for glory with Stacey Smith due to take her place in the heats of the 1,500m while recently-crowned English Schools’ champion Niall Flannery toes the line in the 400m hurdles.

Tomorrow sees Shildon’s Kate Avery line up in the final of the 3,000m.
