Flannery sets junior record to take prize

Cleveland’s Ashleigh Wood survived a late challenge from North Yorkshire’s Louise Earl to win the senior girls’ heptathlon.

Ryan King was successful in the junior boys pentathlon, leading Durham to the team title.

Jayne Hansom of Northumberland, who led after five events, had to give way to the overall strength of West Yorkshire’s Katie Marchant in the intermediate girls event.

lMARTYN Rooney made his best ever season’s start on an impressive return from injury in La Chaux des Fond yesterday despite losing to in-form teammate Rob Tobin.

The two British internationals fought a close battle at the Swiss venue before Tobin pulled clear in the home straight to win by a narrow margin in a season’s best of 45.15 seconds.

Tobin’s performance was the second fastest by a Briton this year after US-based Michael Bingham and bettered the qualifying mark of 45.55secs for the World Championships in seven weeks’ time.

Rooney, who also got the qualifier with a time of 45.35, was more than happy with his return to action after picking up a serious hamstring injury in April which required a lengthy rehabilitation period.
