Batochir breaks record in debut run

MONGOLIAN international Serod Batochir, making his debut in this country, easily won yesterday’s fifth North Tyneside 10km Road Race.
Batochir has joined Morpeth Harriers and will be living in the North East for at least six months.
A record field of 1,900 competitors took part in the event which covered a coastal route from the Park Centre, North Shields, to St Mary’s Lighthouse, Whitley Bay.
Batochir, who competed in the Olympic marathon in Beijing, was content to stay in the leading group in the early stages before picking up the pace after two miles.
Only Alnwick’s David Kirkland attempted to cover the break, but was soon dropped by the leader.
In the bright conditions, and with little wind, Batochir gradually pulled away to win by 33 seconds from his rival.
His time also bettered the course record set by Ivan Hollingsworth, in the inaugural event, by 21 seconds.
Kirkland took second place and, in a close battle for third, Blaydon’s Matthew Armstrong outsprinted Morpeth’s Michael Morris.
Ian Crampton of Durham was the leading veteran in ninth position.
Morpeth retained the team title. Angela Hibbs of Chester-le-Street won the women’s race, finishing in 35th position overall. Morpeth’s Aiveen Fox took second place ahead of 2008 winner Jessica Trowbridge of Gateshead. Morpeth again took the team title.
