SHILDON’S Kate Avery smashed the course record in the senior women’s event at yesterday’s Elswick Harriers Road Race promotion at Newburn Riverside Park, Lemington.
In ideal conditions, the 17-year-old sixth form student, 27th in the recent World Junior Cross Country Championship, bettered Alyson Dixon’s 2008 course record by 18 seconds. Avery came home 41secs ahead of Gateshead’s Mary Ferrier, with Morpeth’s Delyth James taking third place.
Morpeth retained the senior men’s four-stage road relay title, and for good measure their veterans squad were also successful, bettering Sunderland’s three-year-old course record by 19secs.
Morpeth led on the first leg in the veterans’ race with Neil Wilkinson clocking the fastest time. Brian Rushworth took Sunderland into a temporary lead on leg two, before Phil Walker and Craig McBurney regained Morpeth’s initiative on the final two legs.
Visiting athlete Chris White from Nene Valley near Peterborough missed the record in the under-17 men’s race by one second, while Birtley’s Sophie Forster was only three seconds adrift in the Under 13 Girls’ race.
George Lowry of Jarrow and Hebburn (under-15 boys), Chris Peverley of Chester-le-Street (under-13 boys) and Sophie Taylor of Birtley (under-15 girls) were the other winners.
The fifth North Tyneside 10km Road Race takes place tomorrow (10am start). The 2,000 competitors will cover a route starting from The Park Sports Centre, North Shields via Tynemouth to the finish at St Mary’s Lighthouse, Whitley Bay.
