CHESTER-LE-STREET won the Northern Six Stage Women’s Relay for the fourth successive year at the Northern Athletics Road Relay Championships at Woodbank Park, Stockport, yesterday.
In the men’s 12-stage event, Morpeth finished in sixth place, Sunderland 12th. Gateshead were the only other regional team to complete in 17th position.
Veterans dominated yesterday’s fourth Sand Dancer 10km Multi Terrain event at South Shields.
Durham’s Ian Crampton led home the field of 168 runners, with 30secs to spare over fellow over-45 athlete Tom Doughty of Sunderland, the winner of the inaugural event in 2006. Jarrow’s Luke Adams finished in third place. Host club South Shields took the team title from neighbours Jarrow and Hebburn.
Tynedale’s Sonia Morley, in the over-40 category, easily won the women’s race, finishing fifth overall. Heaton’s Jo Zoppi took second. Another Tynedale athlete Joanne Dooley finished third, ensuring the Hexham club took the team title.
Windy conditions affected performances at Saturday’s opening track fixture of the season, the Cyril Elliott Menorial Meeting at Middlesbrough.
Ashleigh Wood won the women’s 100m and hurdles, with clubmates Kate Welford and Eleanor Mullen achieving sprint doubles in the under-17 and under-15 age-groups.
Chris Ferguson of Hartlepool won the senior 100m and 200m.
