Boyzone hitch to Blaydon Race

THE 29th Blaydon Race looks set to boast a strong field – no matter what.

So while race organiser Bob Houston expects the likes of last year’s winner Ayele Mergessa, from Ethiopia, and locals Ian Hudspith and Ryan McLeod to figure once again, the only fly in the ointment are Boyzone.

The Irish crooners are due to perform at Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena on Tuesday, June 9, a date that’s long since become synonymous with the running of the now 5.9-mile race.

That has left race organisers in negotiations with the Arena, Newcastle City Council and the emergency services over the most suitable course of action, given the route’s proximity to the venue and the potential for traffic problems.

But the worst problem Houston anticipates is a slight alteration to the previously scheduled 7.15pm start.“We might have to change it by 10 or 15 minutes,” he confirmed. “Boyzone are playing at the Arena on the same night so we’re in talks with the relevant authorities.

“Congestion in the city centre is an issue because the Arena is right next to the course.

“Other than that, it’s all systems go. We’re hoping for a good, competitive race. Obviously registration forms are only just going out but I’d expect the usual crop of athletes to be involved.

“The Ethiopians and Kenyans have dominated for the last eight or nine years, so you’d expect them to figure prominently, and then there’s the top North East lads.”

Four thousand runners will compete for the two £1,000 prizes, for the first man and woman.

The next seven men and next seven women also receive cash prizes, while Royal Haskoning have sponsored the Geordie Awards – £500, £300 and £200 – for the first three men and first three women from North East athletic clubs to finish.
