MIDDLESBROUGH’S Richard Morrell won the senior men’s event at yesterday’s first North Yorkshire and South Durham Harrier League fixture at Croft.
Morrell caught early leader Gary Dunn of Thirsk at halfway, pulling away to a 39-second victory. Ian Twaddle of North Shields, running as a guest, was third.
Middlesbrough & Cleveland’s Carolyn Summersgill was never headed in the women’s race, winning by 82 seconds.
Veteran Tracy Waller of Hartlepool finished strongly to take second. Schools international Daniel Schofield from Scarborough – who was too old by only days to compete in last weekend’s Junior Great North Run (he was fifth in 2007), won the under-17 race.
Shildon’s Cameron Boyek, North Eastern 1,500m champion, won the under-15 race.
Another Shildon athlete, Zoe Hewitson, the 2007 under-13 North East champion, won the girls’ under-15 event with clubmate Amy Etherington victorious in the under-13 race.
