Struggle for North East athletes

NORTH East athletes struggled on the first day of the Sainsbury’s English Schools Track and Field Championships at Gateshead International Stadium.

Best performance in the mainly wet conditions came from Northumberland’s Jayne Hansom, who finished fourth in the Intermediate Girls’ long jump.

The region will expect to fare better today as Lauren Dewdney of Northumberland clocked the fastest time in the senior 100m hurdles with a legal time of 14.07secs. Cleveland’s Kayleigh Mills threw the longest qualifying distance in the intermediate hammer, with a distance of 43.49m.

Today’s programme commences at 10pm.
