Gateshead Harriers hit fifth spot

GATESHEAD Harriers finished fifth in their second British League Division One fixture at Sheepmount Stadium, Carlisle on Saturday.

The Tynesiders now lie third in the league table, behind match winners City of Sheffield and Trafford.

Gateshead provided three winners, Niall Flannery in the 400m hurdles, Chris Sampson in the steeplechase and Ian Burns, with a personal best throw in the javelin.

North East teams found the Southern opposition too strong at Saturday’s final of the Sainsbury’s English Schools Cup at Costello Stadium, Hull.

The best performance came from Park View School in Chester-le-Street, who finished in seventh place. The Durham squad were the strongest team in the track events, leading at halfway, but struggled in the later field events.

North Eastern 1,500m champion Karen Johns, of North Shields Poly, clocked a personal best time of 2mins 5.7secs running as a guest in the men’s 800m at yesterday’s Northern League fixture at Chester-le-Street.

Meanwhile, Heaton Harriers host the Anita Nott Memorial Women Only Dene Run tonight (7.30pm start).

Registration is at the Corner House Hotel, Heaton Road, with entries accepted on the night.
