Morpeth in relay win

MORPETH Harriers repeated their 2007 victory in the senior men’s relay at yesterday’s Elswick Harriers-promoted Good Friday Road Race, writes LES VENMORE.

Morpeth were fourth, 21 seconds behind leaders Claremont on leg one, before Lewis Timmins moved them into a 41-second lead over Gosforth after the second leg. Timmins also clocked the day’s fastest time.

Mark Hudspith extended the advantage before Ian Hudspith brought them home with almost two minutes to spare. Chester-le-Street held off a late challenge from Sunderland for second.

The cold, windy conditions with heavy showers meant times were slower than in previous years. The exception came in the senior women’s race in which Chester-le-Street’s Alyson Dixon beat Gateshead’s Jessica Trowbridge.

Dixon bettered the old record set by Dianne Henaghan in 2003 by two seconds. Gateshead’s Mary Ferrier, who finished third, took six seconds off the junior record set in 2006.

Elswick’s Grace Taylor was the leading under-17s athlete. With eight runners in the first 15, Chester-le-Street easily won the team event. Sunderland won the veteran men’s relay for the fifth successive year. Tim Field clocked the fastest time on leg one.

Philip Hurst comfortable won for Elswick in the under-17 men’s race and Morpeth’s Marcus Cram won the under-15 boys’ event.

Morpeth gained victories in the under-13 boys’ and under-15 girls’ races, thanks to Adam Harrington and Rachel Denton. Sophie Forster beat Birtley clubmate Sophie Taylor in the under-13 girls’ race.
