With more and more recognition for the decathlon as an event for women, the North East will once again lead the way in promoting the cause.
The second annual decathlon in the region to include women will take place at Monkton Stadium on September 28-29.
The event has already attracted international heptathletes Fiona Harrison and Kerry Jury, who may challenge Julie Holmen's British record set back in 1997, while the junior mark set last year at Hexham by Gateshead's Sophie Dewell is also under threat.
The meeting also includes decathlon for all ages with entries taken up to the day. Further information is available from Team Decathlon on 0191-241 5372.
NSUNDERLAND Harriers open the cross-country season with their annual event this Saturday at Farringdon School.
The Wearside club break new ground with a new competition for under-11 boys and girls over one mile. This race will open the eight-event programme at 1.00.
The senior men's 4x1.8mile relay is scheduled for the fourth event, with the under-17 men bringing the progamme to a close. Late entries accepted on the day.
