Basketball: Mavericks aiming for revenge

MORPETH Basketball Club’s two senior teams both return to action this weekend aiming to hit the ground running after the festive break.

Morpeth Mavericks have a score to settle on Friday night - their last game before the Christmas shutdown ended in a narrow defeat away to All Saints Sabres in the Division Two Knockout Cup semi-final.

Their first game of the new year sees them travel to face the same opposition, this time in a TyneMet Division Two fixture.

The Mavericks feel they have a point to prove as they were short of a number of key players for the cup game. Not only will they be nearer to full strength on Friday, but they are also likely to hand a debut to recent signing Mehmet Gercel.

Meanwhile, Morpeth’s second team the Magic will be looking to cement their position at the top of Division Four on Sunday.

They also pick up there they left off before the Christmas break – and, after inflicting a 57-41 defeat on All Saints T-Wrecks in Newcastle last month, they should be confident of pulling off completing the double over the league newcomers at the Riverside Leisure Centre (tip-off 1.10pm).
