Newport Wasps 44, Berwick Bandits 45

THE Berwick Bandits achieved a spectacular win at Queensway Meadows to take three well-deserved league points.

The visitors were up against it from midway when the Finnish hero Tero Aarnio crashed out of his third ride in heat eight, having already taken two expert wins in the second and fourth races, the latter over the very strong pair of Jordan Frampton and James Holder.

Down to six men, the Bandits were 25-22 down, not helped when heat nine produced a remarkable start for both Wasps leaving Guglielmo Franchetti and Greg Blair lost for an answer in a 5-1 for 30-23. Michal Makovsky had made a slow start to the afternoon but roared round the field on bend two to lead well with Willie Lawson joining him up by going round Frampton on the third lap in a 1-5 for 34-31. And Makovsky inspired Berwick to take the lead in heat 13 by gating like a rocket, followed by his partner Franchetti leaving home number one Mark Lemon floundering in third in for 1-5 (38-39).

With Josef Franc taking heat 14 and Makovsky ending a superb night with a heat 15 win the six points preserved Berwick’s one point lead to the end. Co-promoter John Anderson said: “It was a real team effort and one to be proud of.”
