Draw will ensure survival for Bay

WHITLEY Bay and Tynemouth Ladies can retain their place in the Women’s National Hockey League Conference North by avoiding defeat in Sevenoaks on Saturday.

Bay, who finished ninth in the 10-team division, overcame late logistical problems to beat Rovers Oxford 3-1 in their opening game in the relegation play-offs.

The match was due to be played at Bay’s usual home venue, Marden Bridge Middle School, but switched to John Spence High School at less than 48 hours’ notice.

Bay’s bad week got worse when Emily Court took advantage of their sloppy start to put Oxford ahead. It revitalised the hosts, however, and a diving Liz Perry – playing with a broken toe – equalised before half-time. Two penalty corner goals from Kath Smith not only sealed victory but bettered Sevenoaks’ 2-0 success over the same opponents.

A draw on Saturday will keep Bev Finlay’s side up on goals scored, relegating Sevenoaks.
