Ten-goal Joffy leads way in 26-0 rout

DURHAM University Second XI secured promotion from the Men’s Northern Hockey League Division One with an astonishing 26-0 win over nine-man Doncaster Second XI to complete a prolific weekend, writes STUART RAYNER.

Joffy Wilkes-Green scored ten for the students in Sunday’s record win, which followed an 8-2 success at City of York the previous day.

Dom Foster helped himself to four goals and Andrew Baggs notched a hat-trick. Ali Whitehair, Craig Larner, Michael Roper and Stuart Smyth also scored. On Saturday they face second-placed Wakefield in a title decider.

Sean Wilson scored a hat-trick in Stockton’s 6-1 win over Chester, while Whitley Bay and Tynemouth men lost 4-2 at Crewe Vagrants. The students lost again on Sunday, 2-1 at Deeside Ramblers.

Two second half Jenna Woolven goals saw Sunderland lose ground behind leaders Trojans in the women’s National League Division One.

With the table-toppers playing bottom side Harleston Magpies, the pressure was on Sunderland to take three points at home to Reading. They recovered from Emma Thomas’ 13th-minute penalty stroke, Lisa Garbutt and Susan Hamilton putting them in front at the interval, but were beaten 3-2.

Durham University led twice at Barnes Hounslow Ealing but were held to a 2-2 draw. Loren Sherer and Amy Askew scored in the opening quarter of an hour and the students held a 2-1 lead for 46 minutes until Sarah Cornwell’s second equaliser.
