NEWCASTLE Vipers goaltender Andrew Verner looks almost certain to leave the club after coach Rob Wilson indicated that he is targeting another goalie, writes MARK MAUGHAN.
The move may not go down all to well with the club’s fans, as Verner last year established himself as a crowd favourite with some impressive displays.
However, the Canadian looks set to return to Europe, where he has had previous spells in Austria, Finland, Sweden and Germany.
Wilson said: “I would love nothing more than to have Verns in goal for me again next season, but he’s had offers from Europe which we can’t even come close to. As I said at the (recent fans’) forum, Andrew is in the point of his career where he needs to make as much as he can before he retires.”
Other players who will not be back at the club next season are Jeff Hutchins and Andre Payette after it was revealed that a new import forward has been offered a contract with Wilson is looking to create an “all-new” Vipers squad.
“I spoke to Jeff and made an offer but he didn’t agree with the deal, so I moved on to my next target,” said Wilson.
“He did a great job for me last year when he came back and won over a lot of the fans. I wish him well in whatever he does next and thank him for his efforts in two spells as a player for me. Andre has been a huge part of the organisation for the last four years, and was a big part of our early success.”
Wilson is working hard to recruit some more skilful players after capturing left winger Matic Kralj from Slovenian club HK Maribor.
The Vipers team chief has outlined key positions to be filled in order for the side to progress further next season. “When I spoke to the fan forum at the Hilton Hotel I promised a fresh approach and a clean slate as far as the imports were concerned,” said Wilson.
“And the fans can see I have followed through on that, with only Mark Gouett and Todd Griffith coming back from last year, and the other guys being brand new to the League.
“With the four import spots left, the guys in the frame fit that bill too, so it truly is an all-new Vipers lineup.”
The four import spaces are one forward, one goalie and two defencemen. There is also likely to be another British defenceman added to the roster.
“I have an offer out with the forward and am waiting for a response,” added Wilson.
“The two defencemen have been identified and we have had initial discussions, which are ongoing. I have also agreed to sign a British defenceman, and once the contract is signed details will be announced.”
