Longstaff, Gouett sign Vipers deal

THE Vipers had two presents waiting for supporters who gathered to discuss the club’s future last night, in the shape of Mark Gouett and David Longstaff.
The pair’s new one-year contracts will not have come as a surprise to the assembled faithful, but in uncertain times their returns will have been reassuring nonetheless.
Coach Rob Wilson is planning a major overhaul of his squad in response to last term’s disappointing performance and the tougher financial climate facing the club but Gouett and Longstaff will remain.
Canadian defenceman Gouett has established himself as a reliable figure on the ice and an important one off it, while home-grown forward Longstaff is synonymous with the club he captains.
“We might be starting to overhaul the roster but Mark is one of the first players we spoke to for a return next season,” said Wilson.
“He is a quiet leader respected by all at the Vipers.” Gouett, last season’s Player’s Player of the Year, also runs the club shop. The 2009-10 campaign will be his third on Tyneside.
As a key member of the Great Britain squad who last week claimed a bronze medal at the World Championships, Longstaff was much in demand during the off-season. But the ex-Whitley Warrior had no hesitation in committing to an eighth season with the Vipers. “It is certainly looking to be different to other recent seasons and like Mark I am looking forward to the challenge of next season and using my experience to help younger players around me,” said the 34-year-old.
Last night’s meeting was called to gauge supporter reaction to the news that the Vipers will have to play much of their hockey in Whitley Bay next season.
Meanwhile, Whitley Warriors will be hoping home advantage helps them upset the odds in tomorrow’s Northern League play-off semi-final. Their opponents, Fife Flyers, finished 11 points above them in the league this season. Champions Solway Sharks take on Dundee Stars in today’s semi-final at Whitley Bay. The final is tomorrow.
