WHITLEY Warriors gave league champions Fife their toughest encounter of the season last night – but last year’s season’s play-off winners just came up short.
In a game that would not have disgraced any ice hockey league in Britain, it was the visitors who eventually made the breakthrough.
It came when Steven Lynch tipped home at the far post in the 16th minute.
The Fife side then doubled their advantage inside the last minute of the period when Iain Bell netted with a two-man advantage.
Neither side managed to score in the middle session but that did not detract from the high quality entertainment provided by both sides.
The Warriors then set up a grandstand finish when Bryan Dunn scored on the powerplay at 51.14.
However despite laying siege to the Flyers goal, Whitley were unable to get the marker that would have taken this exciting game into overtime and the chance of some reward.
WHITLEY WARRIORS: Dunn 1+0, Hendry and S Zajac 0+1.
