“The tragedy was that he was rushed into hospital the day we were going to a commercial gallery.”

Peter was born in South Shields and was brought up in Leazes Terrace in Newcastle city centre by his mother, after his father died when he was three-months-old.

After working at the university and meeting Sue, the couple moved south and he worked in Welwyn Garden City, then went freelance as a graphic designer and taught himself photography.

He then found a company in Stevenage which made X-ray cabinets, where staff taught Peter how to use the equipment and allowed him to use their display model to take his own images.

The couple moved to Cumbria in the 1990s as Peter fought cancer, though he continued to work and record the North countryside in his own inimitable way.

Sue added: “This is the first time I’ve had an exhibition in Newcastle. It’s coming home which to me is lovely. He would have been so proud to have it back in his home town.”
