Whitburn Sailing High

WHITBURN Golf Club's men's team have made it through to a major national final and can now look forward to a super trip to Spain. The club has reached the last four stage of the prestigious Mail On Sunday National Golf Club Classic 2009 after beating Ilfracombe from Devon 3.5-1.5 in the quarter-finals at the Marriott Worsley Park Hotel and Country Club near Manchester.

The lads will now taken their place in the semis and final event, which is being staged at Golf de El Rompido in Spain during November.

Whitburn captain Bob Button said: "To say I am over the moon would be an understatement. Getting to the semi-finals of an event like this in my year as captain is the best thing anyone could ask for, and a great achievement for a small club like Whitburn.

"Arranging the matches we have played on our journey so far, in addition to our regular NDUGC league matches, has kept me busy, but I have enjoyed every minute of it.

"The achievement to date lies with the team and the way they have played throughout the season. They have turned in good performances to enable the progress in this competition, and it is a pleasure to get on the golf course and watch good golf being played.

"We have a good mix of ages in the team, and I think that helps the team spirit."

Bob is also very complimentary about the organization behind what is a massive competition with just about every club in the land competing.

He added: "The set up for the quarter-finals in Manchester was very professionally run, and there was a good atmosphere amongst all the teams.

"The itinerary in Manchester not only covered the men's teams but also the ladies, as will be the case at the finals in El Rompido.
