Juniors Tee Up For Success

WHAT a year it has been for the junior section at Beamish Park Golf Club in County Durham. Not only did the junior team secure sponsorship from Charlotte Street Motors of Stanley but also the introduction of junior blue tees to all 18 holes has been a real success in getting more youngsters to play the course.

As well as receiving a weekly coaching lesson from club professional Chris Cole, the junior section has also been working through a golf development programme, which allows each junior to not only develop their skills in chipping, pitching, driving and putting but also increasing their understanding about the rules and etiquette of the game.

On the club competition front this has been well supported and the junior section has even had success in senior club competitions with Matthew Stewart and Dan Knight both securing success.

In the penultimate junior medal of the season, girls filled the first three places.

For the first time the club also organised a junior/senior foursomes competition, which proved a great success.

Beamish Park Junior Liaison Officer Rory Fleming said: "When I took on this role for the first time this year, all I was looking to achieve was for each junior to enjoy playing the game of golf and speaking with the parents and the juniors I think we have succeeded in this."

And the ladies at Beamish Park have also been enjoying themselves and adding a splash of colour to their course.

Playing for the Duck Out Trophy on behalf of The Wear it Pink Breast Cancer Day, the ladies dressed in pink, enjoyed a wonderful day's golf and raised £114 for their charity.

The winner on the day was Hilary Johnson with 37 points (count back applied) and Jean Robinson, who also scored 37 points, had to settle for the runner-up spot.
