County Ladies Gear Up For Big Day

Northumberland Ladies County Golf Association (NLCGA) are busy preparing for the biggest event in the new Northern Region calendar - Northern Counties Match Week. The big event, staged at Eaglescliffe in County Durham last year, will be held at Arcot Hall Golf Club from June 23rd to 27th.

This is the inaugural year for a county within a region being responsible for organising and hosting this prestigious event. Hitherto, the event was organised by the ELGA. Northumberland will be leading the way, with the other five counties playing host over the next five years. So the pressure will be on the NLCGA to set the standard.

Northumberland Area Authority representative, Ros Windows, has lengthened the course from its usual 5844 yards.

NLCGA are responsible for organising and raising funds for the event. The costs incurred will be for numerous support systems, such as scorecards, portaloos, housekeeping, catering ... the list goes on.

To this end, NLCGA are running a raffle, plus asking clubs for donations, either cash or raffle prizes.

The draw for the raffle will take place on Sunday, May 17th at Matfen Hall.

This is the final day of the Northumberland County Championships, when the names of the County Match Week Team will be announced.

The CMW event will be held over five days. Morning sessions will start at 8.45am with the foursomes. The afternoon matches will be singles, starting at 1.00pm.

The golf is always of the highest standard, with some of the most respected of amateur lady golfers in England playing.

NLCGA's Heather Stonebank said: "We would hope that many spectators come to support, especially as entry is free. Those coming to support Northumberland are encouraged to wear red. It is amazing how special it is for our players to see "the red army" across the course.
