Coffee and golf for the ladies

Whitley Bay Golf Club's introduction of a new category of membership to encourage ladies to join the club has been a fantastic success.

As with most clubs in the area, Whitley Bay has seen lady membership numbers dwindle over recent years but it believes it has come up with an innovative way to try and entice new ladies to join the club.

Recognising the fact that a full game of golf takes maybe a little too long to play at times, this is a particular boon to busy women and it alleviates restraints many women have in terms of the time available to enjoy a game of golf.

Whitley Bay has come up with a great introduction to the game, which gets over that problem.

The Café Golf membership not only entitles the lady member to play 5 holes from May through to October, but also includes 6 group golf lessons and a walk and talk on the course covering an introduction to the game of golf.

It also includes 10 vouchers for a free coffee and piece of cake or a glass of wine in the clubhouse after play.

Peter Simpson, Secretary/Manager, says: "The initial response has been fantastic. We have had over 60 ladies registered for our free taster sessions in April and early signs are that the majority of these ladies will take up the offer of Café Golf for the season to come.

"We came up with this idea as a short form of golf, a bit like Twenty20 cricket, the 5 holes will probably take about an hour to play and therefore be perfect for those ladies with a little bit of spare time on their hands."

He added: "It just shows if you come up with the right formula, there are people out there who want to play the game and we hope these ladies get hooked, enjoy Whitley Bay Golf Club and go on to become full lady members in the future."
