City slickers in Rockliffe title bid

THE City of Newcastle club will have four players in The Journal Champion of Champions at Rockliffe Hall on Sunday week as a result of the county player entries from Northumberland.

Nicky Maddison, the British Universities champion, and Jack Hermeston, the county under-16 title holder, will join Phil Ridden and Simon Lee in the side.

Ridden qualifies as defending Champion of Champions. Because Ridden won the 2010 club championship, runner-up Lee plays as a City substitute.

County junior matchplay champion Richard Robson-Crosby (Ponteland), Prudhoe’s St Andrews Boys Champion Tom Rowland and Hexham’s loyal county servant Sean Heads, also play the event.

Newcastle United’s Kevin Cademy-Taylor, the county captain and next year’s England Boys manager, completes the Northumberland contingent.

WHITLEY BAY

Emma’s late call

ISLE of Man golfer Emma Harris looked like missing out on playing the Northern Girls Championship – after a long trip – when the family turned up at the Whitley Bay venue to discover they had forgotten to enter her in the tournament.

However, after a two-day wait during practice, a late cancellation led to Emma, from the Peel club, stepping in to win a long handicappers’under-14 prize.
