Former champion a substitute this year
Aug 14 2010 by Tim Taylor, The Journal
ENGLAND international Simon Lee, the 2008 Journal Champion of Champions, is teeing off in this season’s tournament as a substitute.
Lee plays for the same club, City of Newcastle, as the reigning Champion of Champions, Phil Ridden.
When this season’s club championship was played, winner Ridden finished ten shots ahead of runner-up Lee.
But Ridden was already guaranteed a spot in the Champions field as defending champion, so that left the City spot at Rockliffe Hall on September 5 open for Lee.
Ridden broke his own record total for the 36-hole City championship by four shots, his 132 leaving him 12 under par after rounds of 67 and 65.
