Close encounters of the golf kind

CLOSE House expect their championship course, The Colt Course, to be ready by the time they host The Journal Champion of Champions on Sunday September 4, 2011. It will be the first big event to be hosted on the new fairways.

In the meantime Close House, owned by the founder of Sage, Whitley-Bay born Graham Wylie (pictured right), are sponsoring next season’s Journal Ladies Trophy. They will host the grand final on their existing and appropriately named Filly course on Thursday, September 9 – the names of the two courses underlining Wylie’s love of horse racing.

The ladies’ tournament starts with qualifying events at virtually all the golf clubs in Durham and Northumberland early next season, with the winners going through to separate county finals. Six players from each county final will make further progress to the grand final, where the first prize will be a one-night stayover for two at the Close House Hotel including dinner, bed and breakfast and two rounds of golf.

John Glendinning, golf manager of Close House, said: “We are delighted to be supporting both Journal tournaments.

“The Champions will come here the year after next at an important time in our history, when we very much expect to have our new championship course up and running.
