Whitburn lose out in the last four

WHITBURN’S trip to the sun saw them overshadowed in the final shoot-out for The Mail on Sunday Classic at El Rompido in Spain.

A Hertfordshire club, Moor Park, beat them 5-0 in the semi-finals, Moor Park going on to lose 1½-3½ to Stoneleigh Deer Park, from Warwickshire, in the final.

In the third place play-off, Whitburn lost 4-1 to Dorset club, Parkstone, and captain Bob Button said: “ The whitewash in the semi-final was very disappointing and, overall, it was not a very successful trip to Spain.

“But you have to put it into context. There were something like 3,500 golfers who entered the tournament.”

In the Daily Mail Foursomes, the Durham City ladies pair of Louise Richardson and Sandra Maxwell endured a similarly emphatic end to a previously successful run. All started well at the Forest or Arden when the pair, both Durham County players, beat Northamptonshire club Overstone Park one up in the last 16.

In the quarter-finals, they came up against two Wiltshire county players in Hamptworth’s Jo Shorrocks, a former England junior, and Sally Huffam, who won 6&5.

SOUTH Moor are holding free coaching taster sessions for adults this Saturday and the following Saturday, December 12. They are also putting on regular coaching sessions for juniors on Wednesday evenings, run by the Durham County captain, James Handy, a club member.

All the sessions are open to beginners and non-members and provide an ideal opportunity to experience the sport for the first time.
