Sam's the man for Steve Cram

BANTER with the spectators is one of the trademarks of European Seniors Tour golf, and Steve Cram’s vote for the No 1 pro to follow is Sam Torrance.

“He’s one of my favourites,” says Cram, Slaley’s golf courses and estates manager. “He has this presence when he’s here.

“He’s a very upbeat sort of a person and when he’s going round the course I have noticed him having a good bit of banter with the spectators.

“The Seniors Tour is good all round in that respect and I think that rapport between the players and the spectators helps to make these events special.

“It’s serious competition, but the golfers are still enjoying it and they make sure the spectators go home happy.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle United fan Cram bemoans the fact that four of his 14 greenkeeping staff support Sunderland. He joked: “If I had known we were going to get relegated, I would never have employed them!”
