Obenden wins Matfen Audi qualifier

EIGHT amateur golfers have qualified for the Audi Quattro Cup UK Regional Final golf tournament after enjoying success in the North East Matfen Hall event.
Jonathan Obenden, from Swarland, Philip Harbord, from Castle Eden, Neil Rodgerson, from New Hartley, Ian Moralee, from Kirkley, Barry Forbes, from Annitsford, Tony Ferguson, from Elwick Rise near Hartlepool, Ponteland’s Jackson Muers-Moody, and Annitsford’s Russ Mason have qualified through to the next stage of the worldwide competition.
Obenden narrowly triumphed with a score of 40 points. Harbord, Rodgerson and Moralee all finished on 39 with the trio separated by back nine scores of 21, 19 and 18 respectively to claim second, third and fourth places in the stableford contests.
Forbes finished fifth (38) with Ferguson, Muers-Moody and Mason all tying on 36s for sixth (21 back nine), seventh (20) and eighth (19).
Almost 80 golfers contested the 18-hole competition which is the first step towards the possible prize of representing Great Britain in the World Finals in December.
It was one of more than 20 Quattro Cup events being staged between May and July.
Depending on the entry number, either the two, four, six or eight lowest scoring players progress from each tournament in “pairs” to one of two regional finals.
The top 16 pairs head for the UK final at Bowood Golf & Country Club, Wiltshire, on September 23
Ultimately two pairs will be representing Great Britain contest the world final at the New South Wales Golf Club in Sydney, Australia, on December 14-18.
