Giving good players chance to move up ladder

WITH less than four weeks to go to The Journal Dream Team challenge match against the North Durham Union, Chris Brown has been appointed secretary of the host club, Durham City.

A 42-year-old mortgage broker from Meadowfield , Brown, last year’s captain and the reigning club champion, succeeds Ian Wilson, who is the NDU secretary.

Sponsored by Bill Goff Golf Tours and custom-fit clubs company ZFL Golf, the Dream Team matches are in the third year of a four-year rota.

In 2007, the Dream Team played the Newcastle and District League in the inaugural match at Prudhoe and last year they faced the Hadrian League at Hexham.

This year, it’s the NDU on July 6 at Durham City, with the North Northumberland League next up in 2010.

As ever the Dream Team will be a mixture of top-class players plus movers and shakers in the world of golf. The NDU v Dream Team challenge match will be the main focus of a special preview in Teeing Off on Thursday, July 2.

Despite the recession, The Journal are as ever making every effort to support golf in 2009. The Journal Champion of Champions at De Vere Slaley Hall on September 6 carries the maximum prize table of £1,500.

It is open to all clubs in Northumberland and Durham County and is being played on the same Hunting Course which will host former Ryder Cup winning captains Ian Woosnam and Sam Torrance in The De Vere Collection PGA Seniors Championship on June 25-28.

The Race to Slaley, new this season, has a winner-takes-all-prize of £250 and will see every club’s men’s championship covered in either The Journal or our sister paper, the Sunday Sun, in 2009.
