Another side to Pete Doherty's image

WHATEVER Pete Doherty’s image, the secretary-manager of Bamburgh Castle Mike Robinson, a former Ryder Cup referee, has good reason to think highly of him.
Doherty, the Hexham-born musician, artist and poet, was the subject of much speculation in the tabloid press, focusing on his lifestyle and relationship with supermodel Kate Moss.
Robinson’s grandson Dan Squires, a promising footballer, died of cancer aged 15 last year after initially losing a leg to the disease. The final stages of Dan’s life were brightened by his fondness for Babyshambles front man Doherty’s music.
Another musician, The Who’s Roger Daltrey, supports the Teenage Cancer Trust and arranged for Dan to meet the former Libertines songwriter.
The two hit it off to the extent that Dan remained upbeat to the end and Doherty was moved to give an impromptu performance at his wake.
The 2009 captain of Bamburgh John Cairns has nominated the trust as his charity with funds going to Newcastle RVI, whose professionalism made a deep impression on Robinson during the final stages of his grandson’s life.
Any golfer, male or female, who can manage a day off work on July 3 could do a lot worse than get up a team of four to enjoy Bamburgh Castle’s awesome cliff-top splendour in the Teenage Cancer Trust Golf Day.
The entry fee of £200 per team includes a meal and you can contact Mike Robinson on (01668) 214321 or John Cairns on 07736 066974.
