Dinwiddie joins chase for BMW title

ROBERT Dinwiddie charged up the field in Turin yesterday to join Gary Lockerbie in going into the weekend within striking distance of the BMW Italian Open.
Dinwiddie, the former Walker Cup star from Barnard Castle, shot a four-under 67 to rise from tied 57th overnight to lie within six shots of the lead.
Five birdies and a bogey left Dinwiddie on a 139 total, a shot behind Penrith golfer Lockerbie, who again shot a two-under 69.
Ashington’s Kenneth Ferrie has now missed the cut in all seven events he has played this season, this time by three shots, after returning cards of 75 and 70.
Argentina’s Daniel Vancsik, the halfway leader after scores of 68 and 65, has not had a top 20 finish for almost a year.
However, Northern Ireland’s Gareth Maybin, so close to winning just the seventh European Tour event of his career in December, was in a class of his own.
A course record 64, seven under par, gave the 28-year-old from Belfast a three-stroke lead over Scot Richie Ramsay, French pair Raphael Jacquelin and Christian Cevaer and England’s Marcus Higley, while American John Daly would have been joint second as well but for two closing bogeys.
Maybin had an 8ft putt to take the South African Open five months ago, but missed it and then lost a play-off to Richard Sterne.
