Dr John's Golf Clinic: Get divots flying

AS this is ladies’ day in the Teeing Off column, The Journal has suggested I get in touch with my feminine side! So here goes:

You might have as many as 100 ladies playing in an open, but, even so, if you followed them out on to the golf course after they had finished, there would be no sign of them having been there.

There are very few divots taken or pitch marks made on the green. This is because, in general, ladies do not compress the ball so they do not take a divot or fly their irons high enough to the green. A ball gets in the air because of a descending blow of the clubface, not a sweeping motion.

Most ladies do not compress the ball against the ground with their irons. They try to sweep it off the surface, generally causing a thin shot which has no backspin and therefore does not stop on the green. So ladies, let’s see those divots flying by hitting down on the ball, creating height and control on your approach shots.
