Newton loses 2&1 in final of Seniors

LUCY Newton’s dream debut in the English Seniors Championship took her to the final in Norfolk yesterday, when she lost 2&1 to Hampshire’s Chris Quinn.

Quinn, a former winner of the title, was one up going to the 17th and, with both golfers left with putts in the region of 10 feet, Quinn was the one who sunk hers.

After a day of high winds at Hunstanton, Newton said: “My biggest memory of the day is of playing with a horizontal pony tail. The wind, or rather gale, was so fierce that at the 12th, where you normally take driver, nine iron, you were having to take driver, three wood and nine iron.”

The estate agent from the Matfen Hall club had found herself two down after six holes, but battled back to lie all square at the turn.

Quinn won 10 and 11 and again Newton fought back, taking the 14th and halving 15 and 16 before her brave resistance was ended.

In the morning, Newton won two up in her semi-final against Woodhall Spa’s Denise Parker and her heroics made yesterday a doubly special day for her coach, the Hexham club professional, Andy Paisley.

His brother Chris, Stocksfield’s world number 22 amateur, was the only Englishman named in the European team to play the United States in the Palmer Cup at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver, Colorado on June 3-5.
