Continual development is key to keeping fresh

IT is now a month since the EGU conference for North East clubs in Gosforth. Time for some feedback.

Terry Minett is the general manager of Morpeth and represents the northern region on the national executive committee of the Golf Club Managers Association.

He says: “Generally I considered the EGU seminar two days well spent. The marketing, funding of golf, slow play and the CONGU sessions were particularly useful. I believe the EGU should consider running these roadshow seminars bi-annually, in alternate years to the GCMA bi-annual national conference.

“Continual professional development is key to keeping you fresh. In these keen economic times, we need to continually improve just to stand still.”

Bill Routledge, secretary of Chester-le-Street, said: “As a result of the conference we are looking at ways of marketing our golf club better both on the website and in local publications. We are already amending the website to take this into account. We are also looking at nine-hole competitions for later in the year when the nights are closing in.

“I feel better informed on the Central Database coming into effect in 2010 and I have already downloaded our updated membership software to take this into account.”

Northumberland club secretary Jamie Forteath said : “I thought it was well worthwhile and it was good to see the EGU reaching out to its membership like this.”
