Heworth win on final putt

IT’S been a good year for Heworth, who celebrate their centenary in 2012. The Gateshead club has won the North Durham Union League for the first time in one of the tightest finishes in the 63 years of the league.

One of their top players, England cap Faye Sanderson, has captained the England Girls’ team to another success in their Home Internationals and the club has also learned they will host the English Seniors’ County Finals in their centenary year.

Last year, Heworth hosted the Durham against Yorkshire county clash and next year the Durham County Championship will be at the Gingling Gate course.

The course has matured over the years and is a popular and respected layout as was shown in the inaugural 36-hole Keith Shivers Bowl – the third event in the ZFL North East Masters Series – which attracted a top-class entry.

The event was started in memory of Keith Shivers, who died in April 2009. The Bowl was donated to the club by his friends. Now the club has been crowned North Durham Union League Champions for the first time.
