Close House golf club ladies section has scored an impressive triple whammy of wins - including capturing the prestigious Norah Percy trophy for the first time in nearly half a century. This County knockout trophy is open to ladies with handicaps from 29 to 36 and is competed for by the majority of clubs in Northumberland.

On the way to the final played at Burgham Park in Northumberland, the Close House team had a bye in the first round and then went on to beat Westerhope 4-1 away, Matfen Hall 3-2 away and Ponteland 4-1 at home.

The final against Linden Hall was always going to be a very close affair but the Close House team fought through to win by 3-2 with one match going to the 19th hole.

The winning team at Burgham were Monica Ryan, Sheilagh Leonard, Mary Oldfield, Joan Eke and Close House Vice-Captain Ann Smith.

Ann told Golf North East: "Unlike Ponteland, who have a large ladies section, we are very much handicapped in actually getting a team out, so this year it has been a really huge effort and to win the trophy with the few resources we have is a fantastic accomplishment."

Other team members who played in previous matches were Caroline Smith, Pauline Elliot and Annette Spencer, but were unable to play in the final due to handicap alterations or holiday commitments.

Linda Hoyle, vice-captain of Northumberland County Ladies Golf Association, presented the trophy to the team.
