Gateshead 2 Braintree Town 2

GATESHEAD go into today's FA Trophy third round draw knowing they must finish off Braintree Town in tomorrow's last 32 replay - but with a vow of firm self belief from boss Ian Bogie.

The Heed were just 20 seconds from seeing off the Iron at the International Stadium on Saturday when the Essex outfit equalised through Kenny Davis, just seconds after debutant Jamie Chandler had scored what looked to be a dream winner in his first game since joining from crisis club Darlington.

Jai Reason’s goal had cancelled out Jon Shaw’s 26th of the campaign in the first half meaning another 90 minutes plus the potential for extra time and penalties looms in Essex tomorrow night.

However, Bogie told The Journal: “We go there full of confidence because our away form is fantastic.”

And he admitted that former England under-19 international Chandler is in line to make his full debut.

Bogie will also assess his hotshot Shaw ahead of the game but insists he is not suffering from a serious injury, despite limping off gingerly on Saturday.

Bogie explained: “Jon’s been struggling with a bit of tightness around his groin areas, it’s nothing serious.

“As a precaution we took him out relatively early in the second half and you could see we lost a bit of impetus at the top end of the pitch with no physical presence.”

Shaw has underlined his goalscoring prowess all season but his 15th minute opener against Braintree was one of the most bizarre goals the 605 crowd will ever see.

Keeper Nathan McDonald raced out to clear Shaw’s effort before it ricocheted of the goalie’s shins and rebounded back off Shaw before rolling over the line.

Braintree boss Alan Devonshire had suffered an exit in the Trophy last season with Hampton & Richmond when his side were rolled over 6-0.

But the former West Ham star shook his team up with a double change before the break.

And this paid off when one of the substitutes, Reason converted from close range.
