NORTH Shields aim to stretch an impressive 11 games unbeaten sequence when they line up against Guisborough Town in the Skilltrainingltd Northern League Second Division at Ralph Gardner Park this afternoon.

The Robins claimed only two points from the first 12 but since then have won eight and drawn three of 11 matches to move up into fourth position – their highest rating since gaining promotion from the Wearside League.

“We have played really well in the last three months following a slow start,” said manager Anthony Woodhouse. “I am satisfied with the progress we’ve made and we are in a healthy position, just a point behind Marske United who currently occupy the last promotion place.

“But every week UI warn the lads that there is an awful long way to go so we can not rest on our laurels.”

The Robins face another difficult test today since Guisborough Town are sixth from top and Woodhouse goes into the game without five of his regular squad. Brain Smith, Robbie Livermore, Anthony Lowther and Femi Akibolu has returned to Ghana for a month.

In addition, Denis Livermore has announced his retirement and Woodhouse hopes to sign a replacement in the near future.

Jarrow Roofing are also challenging for promotion and after having their last two games postponed are keen to return to action at Brandon United.

“It’s a pity we’ve been idle recently. Only one side has played fewer games and some have fulfilled six more fixtures than ourselves. I don’t want to face a backlog come the end of the season,” said manager Richie McLoughlin.

Jarrow have Stuart Dixon and Tony Thirkell suspended but McLoughlin anticipated Scott Donaldson and Chris Hughes resuming.

Sunderland RCA enjoy a four-point lead at the top of the table ahead of the visit from neighbours Washington to Meadow Park.

Boss Neil Hixon blooded six youth team players in the midweek Brooks Mileson Memorial Cup tie at Hebburn Town but recalls his senior players today.
