LEADERS Ryhope CW won a seven-goal thriller against second-top Scarborough Town in the Second Round of the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup.

The Wearsiders were on the back foot during the opening half and trailed to an own goal and one by Joel Ramm, but produced a stirring performance after the break.

John Butler reduced the deficit and David Newby equalised. Boro though regained the initiative with a Nathan Cook penalty but once again Ryhope hit back and levelled with Butler’s second goal of the game. In stoppage time Glen Moan converted the penalty to clinch a 4-3 victory for his side.

Jarrow beat off a strong challenge from Hartlepool in the Preliminary Round of the Wearside League Cup.

Goalkeeper Tony Ord made two outstanding saves before being beaten by John Webster. Liam Clark restored parity and he was on target with the winning goal near the end.

Boldon CA went out of the Sunderland Shipowners’ Cup at the quarter-final stage.

Stephen Barker and Shane Erskine had New Marske two goals ahead before Chris Robertson netted a penalty.

The South Tynesiders pressed in the later stages but their hopes ended in the 88th minute when Shaun Howes scored.

Ashbrooke Belford House moved into third place behind Ryhope CW and Scarborough Town but they were taken to the wire by Houghton Town. Martin Deacon scored the only goal 10 minutes from time. Teesside Athletic slipped back to fourth when they were held to a goalless draw by Cleator Moor Celtic and goals were also scarce at Willington.

Liam Bowes was the only marksman and his strike earned Willington their second win of the season, at the expense of Silksworth.

Michael Owens was an early marksman for Coxhoe Athletic but Easington Colliery hit back to finish comfortable winners with strikes from Chris Tarn, Adrian Sanders, Rob Huntley and Danny Flounders.
