BEDLINGTON Terriers thrilled their supporters at Welfare Park last night when they inflicted only the second defeat of the season on Spennymoor Town.
The visitors would have top of the Skilltrainingltd First Division had they taken just a point from the match but Whitley Bay remain in front on goal difference. The Seahorses have a game in hand on their closest rivals.
Bedlington gave their best performance of the season and were worthy 2-1 winners.
It was Spennymoor who broke the deadlock on 23 minutes when Gareth Waite controlled a corner and fired past goalkeeper Paul Newton from just outside the penalty area.
It was not until the hour that the Terriers equalised as Jamie Poole hit a tremendous first-time volley which soared into the top of the net.
Spennymoor, however, missed a golden opportunity to regain the lead just seven minutes later when the normally reliable Jamie Clarke fired a penalty high and wide.
Bedlington clinched victory with a 78th-minute strike from Anthony Shandran, who pounced on a long ball before going on to fire home.
Tow Law Town’s new manager Craig Veart made a winning start at Consett where Mark Eccles scored directly from a corner midway through the first half.
Consett’s Steve Huggins levelled with a penalty awarded for a foul by Mark Salmon who was red-carded but despite their numerical disadvantage, the Lawyers claimed the points with Lewis Teasdale’s goal on the stroke of half-time.
Norton and Stockton Ancients made an excellent start to their first ever season in Division One but are now in the bottom half of the table after losing 3-2 to Bishop Auckland, who are going in the opposite direction.
