“THAT was the week that was” just about sums up the last seven days for Newcastle Blue Star.
Following a 4-0 drubbing by Skelmersdale United last weekend the Tynesiders’ place in the UniBond League play-offs was still uncertain but they have roared back to form in the last few days.
They hammered Rossendale United 4-1 on Tuesday and two days later turned the form book on its head by defeating Skelmersdale in the return fixture.
The two results lifted Blue Star into third position ahead of the visit from fourth-placed Colwyn Bay this afternoon.
“It’s been a nail-biting experience but if we hold Colwyn Bay, we’ll end up third and go into the play-offs confident that we can gain promotion,” said director of football Bob Morton.
“We’ve been playing three times a week and travelling long distances. On Thursday night, 10 squad players were sidelined and hopefully quite a number of them will be back tomorrow.”
In fact, the Tynesiders were so low on numbers at Skelmersdale that first-choice goalkeeper Dan Lowson, who was not fully fit, was still named as a substitute and was forced into action as an outfield player.
