CARLISLE United extended their unbeaten league run to six games and laid down their play-off marker as they brought an abrupt end to Sheffield United’s own run of eight consecutive victories in all competitions.
The afternoon could not have started better for the hosts when McGovern floated a lovely ball forward for Francois Zoko.
His first touch took him past his marker and he finished it off expertly when he strode into the box and slid the ball into the bottom corner.
The Blades were back on terms almost immediately when Carlisle allowed a deep free-kick to drift past the far post. The defence stood static as the ball was nodded back into the mix and Ched Evans made no mistake as he buried it into an empty net from close range.
The visitors were lifted by the goal and they went close again when they pushed forward in numbers from a quick free kick.
McDonald rolled the ball back into the box and Evans was stunned when his thunderbolt thumped back off the post.
It was another exciting game and the Cumbrians went ahead again when Thirlwell reacted first to a poorly-cleared corner.
His measured pass found Miller onside and unmarked and he bided his time before setting up Zoko for a diving header which marked his fifth goal in five outings since his return to the starting eleven.
The action swung from end to end and Quinn thought he had done enough when he spun and shot with plenty of away shirts in support.
His volley smashed against the base of the post. Flynn tried to get a touch but Michalik intervened to hook the ball clear.
Jon-Paul McGovern showed skill to unleash a rasping drive through a packed box as Carlisle gave as good as they got, but the visitors ended the half on top with Collin having to spread himself to block on the line at close range from another dipping corner. The pressure was made to tell in time added on for the half when Evans blasted a fierce free-kick into the wall.
McDonald had his instinctive shot immediately blocked by Murphy, but Evans had stayed alert and he doubled his tally for the day with a drilled effort which Collin could do nothing about.
Both sides held back after the break but a quick passing move from Sheffield carved a way through for Evans with an hour gone.
He used strength to work space but he was left with his head in his hands again as his precise shot bounced back off the foot of the post. Carlisle, though, were not so wasteful and good football brought their third of the game as Murphy rolled his man out wide.
His pass to McGovern brought a link-up with Miller before the midfielder sent the large home crowd wild with a wonderful finish.
Sheffield huffed and puffed but the Brunton Park doors remained firmly closed – and the Cumbrians deservedly opened 2012 with an impressive three points.
Manager Greg Abbott said: “The fans wanted exciting football and we have started to give it to them.
“We have played well and there are no negatives from the day at all. “
