Consistency is the key for Carlisle United

James Tavernier

HAVING experienced the highs and lows of League One in half a week, right-back James Tavernier is hoping Carlisle United find a bit of consistency.

Last Saturday, the Cumbrians were thumped 4-0 at Charlton Athletic, with Tavernier one of the culprits in a performance littered with individual errors.

They followed it with what manager Greg Abbott described as the best display of his time at the club to beat Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday, with Tavernier playing a starring role.

Starting with today’s visit of Oldham Athletic, the Newcastle United loanee is hoping the 3-2 win becomes a benchmark rather than a one-off.

Do that, and he believes a play-off campaign is well within Carlisle’s reach.

Tavernier said: “We have to find a bit of consistency, playing as well as we did against Sheffield Wednesday.

“It will bring results and loads of confidence. If can keep the consistency it will be really good for everyone.

“It was great football, probably good to watch from the stands, and we were happy just to get that win.

“It is a massive boost to the team but we have to take another three points at the weekend.”

Although Ryan Lowe came close to equalising from its final kick, Tuesday’s 3-2 win flattered the Owls.

They took a first-half lead against the run of play, and Rob Jones scored a second in a spell of kitchen-sink football as they battled back from 3-1 down.

Like Charlton, the Sheffield giants are in another league to Carlisle when it comes to finance and support.

Despite a number of other teams falling into the same category, Tavernier believes his side can secure a top-six finish as in 2008.

He added: “Most definitely, with the football we played on Tuesday.

“We were disappointed we lost at Charlton, but we still got better in the second half there.

“We know if we play like we did against Sheffield Wednesday against any team in the league we would have a shout.”
