Colchester 2, Carlisle United 1

John White hit one from distance at the start of a scrappy second half when a long clearing punch from Collin sat up in front of him, but he couldn’t keep it down.

Another excellent set piece from Kavanagh had the Colchester defence worried and Livesey got there first to glance it on.

Williams reacted quickly and got the touch needed to send it wide.

The U’s were back on level terms on 61 minutes when John-Joe O’Toole sprinted clear down the right.

His cross was a real tester and Clive Platt was on hand to nod it home under pressure from Keogh.

Wordsworth nearly gave the home side the lead when he curled a 25-yard free-kick over the wall. Collin stood still as the ball dipped and crashed against the bar.

And the woodwork was in play again when substitute Kayode Odejayi took advantage of a Livesey slip. He angled in towards the target and thundered a low cross past the dive of Collin, relieved to see it ping back off the post and clear.

Danny Livesey tested Williams with a speculative effort on 81 minutes and it was an uncomfortable save that took it behind as it skipped up awkwardly off the lumpy surface.

But the sting in the tail belonged to Colchester as a goalmouth scramble deep into injury time resulted in an Odejayi volley that flew past Collin and in.
