Wearside League

THE weather again ruined a Wearside League programme as, a week after the entire programme was washed out, half the fixtures were postponed.

Coxhoe Athletic managed to stage their game and were rewarded with an emphatic victory over Willington which propelled them into second place, a couple of points adrift of Teesside Athletic with two games in hand.

Paul Bailes rifled a hat-trick with John Shields and Lewis Henry also on target for Coxhoe, who have won all five matches. Trevor Ball and Adam Blenkinsopp replied for Willington, who in contrast, have taken just one point from seven games.

Ryhope CW came out on top of the local derby with Ashbrooke Belford House at Silksworth. Two well-matched sides were heading for stalemate until Gareth Hill fired home from close range, and just before the end, Carl Davison struck. Ryhope are now in the top half of the table for the first time.

Their neighbours Silksworth Community are second bottom after losing at Windscale despite scoring first through Andrew Bowes.

Poor defending enabled Stephen Miller to level and 10 minutes from the end David McKinlay punched the ball into the net when attempting to clear a long cross from Simon Borrowdale.

Champions New Marske made a slow start to the campaign but have come good and they moved up into fourth place defeating Guisborough HC with a brace of goals by Shaun Mackin.

New Marske goalkeeper Justin Hutchinson saved a penalty and the Seasiders ended the game with 10 men after having two sent off.

Alex Strickland (2) and Daryl Ridis earned Kirkbymoorside victory at Hartlepool whose only reply was credited to Chris Birbeck.
