SUNDERLAND finished third in the FA Tesco National League Northern Division, eight points behind champions Nottingham Forest, after they ended the season with a 2-0 win over Preston North End.

Natalie Gutteridge grabbed both goals in the second half. Newcastle United, who played their final game last week, finish fourth – 17 points behind Sunderland.

In the Northern Combination, Middlesbrough finish fourth thanks to an 8-0 demolition of Bradford City. Nicky Duckling (4), Sarah Manning, Claire Helm, Jess Close and Amy Lavelle all scored.

Blyth Spartans finished third-bottom of the North East Regional League after they lost 3-1 at Huddersfield Town, while Team Northumbria finished second-bottom after going down 2-1 at Guiseley. Fourth-top Stokesley lost 8-4 at Leeds Carnegie.

In the first division, where Whitley Bay were champions, Teesside Atheletic lost 6-1 at home to Pelton Newfield.
