NEW Marske stay favourites for the championship but Ryhope CW are in with a chance after defeating third-top Hartlepool by an only goal on Saturday.

It took a special effort to break the deadlock. There appeared little danger for the Pool defence when full-back John Toomey took a pass 30 yards from goal but he struck a tremendous shot that beat goalkeeper Ian Davies.

New Marske march on and have a two-point lead with three games in hand on Ryhope. Despite conceding a ninth-minute penalty to Harton and Westoe’s Anthony Cook, the Seasiders won. Shaun Mackin equalised on 58 minutes and in the last 18 minutes Mark Farrell and Dane Breckon made sure of the points.

Top six sides Jarrow and Easington Colliery shared the spoils at Perth Green. Kris Goss opened for the home side and they held the lead for 71 minutes before Chris Tarn levelled.

East Durham United stay bottom but their hopes of avoiding the wooden spoon improved with a 6-1 win at Silksworth Community, who are a point in front of their rivals. John Caris and Barry Turton both scored hat-tricks with Silksworth’s reply by Shaun Smith.

Coxhoe Athletic are third from bottom despite winning 4-2 at Guisborough Black Swan courtesy of Elliott Gardner (2), Trenton Hewitt and Gareth McMahon. Christopher Lunn and Michael Magowan replied.

Stephen Hewitt, Mike Farrer and Darren Donald led Whitehaven to victory over Ashbrooke Belford House with Martin Deacon responding. Boldon CA’s lost at Windscale for whom Andrew McDonald hit a hat-trick, and goals by Stephen Kirkbride and Scott Thompson earned Annfield Plain a draw with Willington whose scorers were Robert Allen and Francesco Dipietro. Wolviston scored three to beat Teesside Athletic.
